General Discussion / Ready for Halloween?
« on: October 11, 2016, 12:52:43 am »
Ready for Halloween?  :o

I am!

I don't dress up/go out, but I have lotta decorations in my apt, on my door.

I gave plastic rings:  skulls, bats etc. to a lot of people: people in my building, (usually female) cashiers, receptionists, people in dentist's office. Sometimes strangers on the bus/their kids.
I have realistic plastic maggots too! I've had them for years, as not many "takers" for maggots, alas! Sad

I get a big kick out of this!

General Discussion / Any self improvement projects?
« on: August 08, 2016, 10:12:00 pm »
Current or coming up?

I have two or so:
-reading my posture book, doing the exercises
My posture is lousy despite years of yoga.  Haven't done any lately.

-reading the course materials for a recent depression course I took

Also, trying to be mindful....hard to get into it this time.  I've done mindfulness before for fairly long periods.  ("mindfulness" not "mindfulness meditation")

General Discussion / Paul M "is a superstar"
« on: July 18, 2016, 04:15:26 am »
He was one of the MDAO volunteers that was mentioned in the July 16 MDAO newsletter.

Quote
The stellar Carmine Pitucci
The marvelous Fay
And our superstar Paul Morton

I've met all three of them.

Quote
One of our longest-serving volunteers, the fantastic Tom Smallwood, received an Ontario Volunteer Service Award for his commitment to serving MDAO for the past 20 years.

Tom isn't on this forum, but some of you may know him.

General Discussion / My meow passed away suddenly....
« on: June 08, 2016, 03:53:14 pm »
Yesterday morning.....fell off the bed, twitched for a few minutes, and died quickly, I think.

Didn't suffer.  He wasn't sick.  He was overweight, though.

He was 11.  I had him for a year - my first cat.  I had asked the Humane Society for an older one.

Very shy and skittish.  Took him a while to warm up to me.

I named him "Moo Moo," but I actually usually called him "Meow" or similar.

Peter   :-*

Today's my birthday - 69  ;D               Re Moo dying just before my birthday, I don't dwell on that.

General Discussion / Any Cymbalta experience?
« on: June 05, 2016, 07:47:46 pm »
I'm switching from 30 mg Cipralex to 30 mg Cymbalta.  Staying on 300 mg Wellbutrin XL.

I'll look at Crazymeds.   https://www.crazymeds.us/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HomePage

General Discussion / I'm 69 in a few weeks!
« on: May 25, 2016, 11:17:02 pm »
I'm 69 in a few weeks!  Not a huge deal, but 69 sounds older than 67, 68  - closer to 70?

I have two 70 year old friends who look much younger.

I feel much younger, he said adjusting the propeller on he beanie hat.
(I have one, of course  :o)

General Discussion / Thought it was p.m. instead of a.m.!
« on: May 11, 2016, 08:39:03 am »
Woke up at 7:30, thought it was p.m.  :-[

I called the Dementia Society Hotline - they're coming to pick me up.  I hate it when they shoot me with a tranquilizer dart when I put up a struggle.  :o

This doesn't happen so often - I don't worry about it.  Re mixing up days - semi common with retired people.  I don't worry about that either.

Re days, the bottom right corner of Windows has the date in numbers only.  You have to hover over it to find out what day of the week it is.

General Discussion / Shy Bladder Syndrome Workshop
« on: April 27, 2016, 01:02:57 am »
Hi, going to shy bladder syndrome (paruresis) workshop in Toronto at the end of May.....if they get enough participants.
http://paruresis.org/

Can't use urinals.  This started in high school....not sure why - because of extreme nervousness/performance anxiety?

I hate it.

Nothing to do with modesty, nudity in my case.  I would gladly go to a nude beach and such, BUT, I had skin cancer (not a big deal - the mild kind) years ago.  If I went, I would wear a giant white sheet with eye holes cut out.   8) I also have light sensitive eyes.

The IPA has women members.....separate workshops, I guess.

Ironic that I sometimes go by "Pee," as many people call me "Pee Bee." ;)

General Discussion / Feeling.....
« on: April 11, 2016, 04:00:21 pm »
The most depressed I've been in ages yesterday.  No thoughts - not sure why.  Like my ex psychiatrist used to say:  there MUST be some thoughts.

Anyway, I felt better yesterday after doing some chores (for a change!).

I was going to go to Emergency at Scarborough General up the street just to talk......I may see my Dr's nurse tomorrow just to talk, or a Dr.
My regular hospital is St. Michael's, but not so convenient now that I'm in Scarborough.

Better today........watching Babymetal over and over again cheers me up - serious.... :o

Better today!

General Discussion / New hoarding/clutter support group at MDAO.

I may go.  I'm more of a clutterer than hoarder, and used to be worse.

When I was working, I would often lose documents ON my desk.   :-[  After not finding it ON my desk, I would ask my wonderful work neighbour for her copy.

-I'm (a bunch of us) doing a Laughing like Crazy show at the University of Toronto next week....grad students and health care workers (?)
-I bought me a Portugese (sp.) custard tart...mmmm....not too sweet, unlike a lotta desserts

« on: March 04, 2016, 11:30:23 pm »
From Mind, Mood and Memory that I subscribe to. (from Massachusetts General Hospital)

-probiotics - small study showed less social anxiety when subjects ate more foods containing probiotics like yoghurt, sauerkraut, pickles, kefir

-prebiotics (non digestible food)

-foods containing zinc

-foods containing tryptophan, like turkey

-foods containing folate

-foods containing magnesium

-foods containing omega - 3 fatty acids

-complex carbohydrates

General Discussion / How's everyone doing?
« on: February 26, 2016, 05:12:37 am »
I'm ok....semi.  Maybe mildly depressed for months....can't be bothered to tidy up and such for ages....but going to the gym lately, on the other hand.

I don't have Seasonal Affective Disorder that I know of...  Looking forward to Daylight Savings Time in early March!

Peter

Found out I have a cataract.  Not a huuge deal - it could affect my vision years down the road.  My optometrist says sunglasses will help.  I'm very bright light sensitive anyway.

General Discussion / Taking a singing course....
« on: January 15, 2016, 02:23:50 am »
Toronto Bd of Education evening course.  3 (!) hours on Tuesdays, but no break (!), so we leave 15 minutes early.

First class was Tuesday - strenuous!  Stretching exercises, especially.  Learned a LOT about anatomy, vocal chords and such.  Trivia:  whispering is bad for your voice, among other things....can't remember the other things.

I thought I was getting a sore throat afterwards - my (older) vocal chords weren't used to that much of a workout.

Luckily, the teacher is very good, and funny!

Peter

I thought this might help with anxiety - proper breathing and such.  I've never sung before.

General Discussion / Organizing my apt/things....
« on: January 07, 2016, 11:52:27 pm »
Organizing my apt/things.  Although my tiny apt is messy I get really pleased when I discover a shortcut.

It occurred to me today to do a Word document (with links) of clubs I belong to, and clubs/places I could go to.....partly to meet chix :-*  I can still keep the brochures I have on the above - one reason my apt is messy.

This was a good one a few months ago - my shopping cart (I only use it for laundry) takes up a lot of space.  I store it in the bathtub!  Out of sight.

This is also a great excuse not to take a bath....too much trouble to move it.
