General Discussion / Re: WHERE IS EVERYONE???
« on: October 15, 2023, 09:57:33 pm »
I keep forgetting to check in.

My "main" forum used to be Mood Garden....it's in the U.S., and about to close.  It used to be huge - it had 4-5 (?) moderators.

Lake, maybe I remember you......  I remember some of the people you mentioned.  BTW, I think Stenacron Man (sp.) goes by more than one nickname.  I think he was a fellow comic during the MDAO Laughing Like Crazy days......that's standup comedy by us "mentally interesting" people.

I went to an in person MDAO support group last year (?).  It was held in a room in the library just south of Yonge and Eglinton on the west side.

A health update with me - (old people (76) talking about their operations! ::))

I had skin cancer for the third time recently.  (25 or more years between the first and second "episodes").  I have had basal cell carcinoma - not so dangerous, but it has the habit of repeating sometimes....I'm an example.  The first two times:  laser treatment....only took minutes.
My recent time:  minor operation...local anesthetic.

Before the mini operation they told me to bring food, something to read...why?...because the operation takes 3-6 hours! :o :( :-\  They take slices of skin, and look at in under microscope in the next room....that's why it takes so long.  Then another slice of skin, and so on.  ("mohs surgery)

I was finished in 2 hours. ;)

Didn't go to Munich...hard to explain why.

I went to St. John's, Nfld.  Nice place, but small.  Nice scenery around the city.

One negative thing - my hotel was far from downtown, where the action is.

Re thick, hard to understand accents - I only met one person like that, but a lot of people had trouble understanding meee!

Highlight of my trip:  I was walking down the street, lugging heavy shopping bags.  A middle aged woman (a stranger) pulled over ahead of me, offered me a ride to my hotel!  How heart warming.  That would NEVER happen in Toronto...not sure about the rest of Ontario.

I changed my mind - instead of visiting cousin and then Hamburg, I'm going to Munich.

Cousin and Hamburg is too confusing.

Also, I chose Munich because it's kind of "exotic" - food, accent - probably hard to decipher!

I was going to go to Germany for the first times since I was 3!.....in the next few weeks.

I speak German (never spoke English to parents=they spoke lousy Englishl

I haven't spoken German in 20 years - no parents to speak with.  I'm 75 (years young)  I would explain this to people, which would open doors to further conversation with strangers.  They may be surprised I speak (rusty) German after all these years.

I hope to stay in a hotel for a few days, if they'll have me....partly because I'll feel like "I'm bargng in on them", since we're barely in touch, except for the odd email.

MDAO needs to advertise the online support group somehow.

General Discussion / Re: Anyone meditate or interested?
« on: June 11, 2022, 08:01:14 am »
et....Good for you!  Like I said, haven't felt different from meditating for two weeks....

But, right after I meditate I can tell I did well because Muse measured my brain waves (Muse told me I did), and after I meditate I feel slowed down for about 20 minutes. which is a nice feeling.  If someone knocked on my door, I would answer the door pretty slowly....which is a nice feeling.

Peter

Btw, when meditating, you may have intrusive thoughts that come out of nowhere.  All medication experts say to just ignore the intrusive thoughts.....don't worry about them.
Worrying about the instrusive thoughts is worse than the ACTUAL thoughts!  If that makes sense.

I used to meditate and do mindfulness ("mindfulness," not "mindfulness meditation" - they're different).

The last few years I can't do either on my own.  Not sure why....?

Lately, I need help, so I bought a Muse - https://choosemuse.com/.

You're supposed to feel different after about two weeks.  I've been doing it for a week, twice a day, and I keep improving.
I know that because Muse tells me exactly how long I'm neutral, calm every day.....with cumulative totals, and a graph.

And Muse congratulates me, and I can congratulate myself on a "diary."  Also, I can give myself little images of birds on my profile if I do well.

Amazing!

Peter

Didn't know it was invented in Toronto.

Someone reminded me of this.

He had leukemia, but no pain, and he knew he was dying.  (there are different types of leukemia)

I knew it was June 24, but (this isn't logical....).....I keep thinking June 24 was "a few months ago."   ::)

I had 4 brothers (no sisters) - now I have two, and one has Alzheimers.

I'm 74 1/2, so not THAT unusual that people around my age would fade away.

Peter

I'm lucky - overweight smoking parents lived fairly long.

Hi, E.....That was the virtual meeting, just out of curiosity?  I'm not interested in attending, as I'm not bipolar.

When I was in Laughing like Crazy, virtually everyone in it was bipolar.

MDAO should announce on the front page that the online support group is open again.

LOL - I also take an acid reducer, cholesterol med, 2 or 3 blood pressure meds.  A couple of others.

My nephrologist added a tiny amount of another blood pressure med to get my blood pressure under 120, which it is :)

My former nurse practitioner, if my b.p. was around 130, she thought that was great.  The nephrologist thinks that's really high.

I should try attending a different support group here one of these days.

Hi, Rich.....

I take 10 meds, 2 of which are antidepressants:  Wellbutrin, Mirtazapine.

I like Mirtazapine.  Wellbutrin, I'm not sure it still works.  I tell Dr's, and all I get is "keep taking it."

My 10 meds - not as bad as it sounds:  my cholesterol med, I BARELY need, stomach acid reducer I could maybe do without.

My 3 heart meds - I no longer have a minor heart ailment, but cardiologist says to keep taking them forever.
