General Discussion / Re: How is everyone doing?
« on: April 05, 2019, 02:20:56 pm »
I'm o.k....  I was taking a Dealing with Anxiety and Depression course at MDAO, but I quit - missing too many classes.  But I'll look at the workbook.

My brother with dementia - he's being assessed for long term care (?), or moving out of his house into an apartment setting?
He needs care re making meals, remembering his medications.
His son took away his car keys when his back was turned.....LOL

My younger brothers and I visited.  He later told his son that "the Germans" were nice.  We are German, but maybe he thought we were cousins from Germany?....LOL

I changed my mind on doing a memory study....  Might be a little stressful:  going all the way to Baycrest, trying to get family member to come with me, MRI's....etc...  I have enough medical appointments (nothing serious).

For the memory studies, they often want a spouse/family member to accompany the person in the study...so they can ask them re my memory.
I had told them I can MAYBE get a family member to accompany me once, not regularly.

Peter

Maybe I can do a study in the future.

Learned yesterday that he thinks he has two cats, instead of one.

Maybe he's gone downhill quickly?  He didn't think this when I saw him last week.......or, it doesn't mean much.

Cogniciti is associated with Baycrest.  Not sure if you have to be over a certain age to do the tests, volunteer to be a guinea pig.

General Discussion / Used my cell phone today - first time.
« on: March 06, 2019, 10:02:34 pm »
I got a cellphone in August (?).  I had a mental block about it - it'll be complicated.  I'm kind of afraid of technology, but not really - I'm on the internet a lot.

Took my phone to Samsung today....it died, and wouldn't charge.  They'll notice I've never used it, and slap me in the face!   ::)

Turns out, it worked when the Samsung person used HER cable....weird!  Just bought MY cable from Bell.

Didn't make any calls today, but did some housekeeping, without looking at my Android for Dummies.

Peter

I procrastinate on "difficult, complicated" things....cell phone, income tax (someone doing it for me this year).

Peace, thanks, and sorry to hear about your diagnosis difficulties.

Speaking of medication, I'm forgetting to take my Mirtazapine and Melatonin too often! :o

I take them when I go to sleep.

I don't forget to take Wellbutrin XL (I still take that), as I take it when I get up.

Saw resident psychiatrist.  Turns out I only see her once, and she'll refer me to a social worker....who I've met a few times.  This social worker only sees people on a short term basis - a few months (?).

She thought maybe my diagnosis when younger (and now?....I forget) was mild autism.  Not the aspect of "I can't read peoples' feelings/body language." aspect of autism....she meant more the aspect of autism where you like routine?....I didn't really look it up.

Because I was nervous.......
1....I didn't ask why I wouldn't see another psychiatrist instead of a social worker.  BTW, I'm sure a lot of social workers can be better therapists than psychiatrists.  (btw, I'm not on meds that have to be monitored/adjusted frequently.

2.....I forgot to tell her "my main depression symptom is I can't keep my apt tidy."  On the other hand, my original diagnosis is Dysthymia, which would infer "can't be bothered....to tidy my apt........and millions of other things."  She might assume I'm like that.

Peter

She's ANOTHER anti-benzio person!.....forget if she meant for older people only.

There's very few companies these days who offer benefits once the employee retires.

Thanks for the well wishes, guys.

Yes, I'm very lucky about my benefits....I also have a dental plan, thank goodness.  Lucky!

Peter

Maybe the Feds, Post Office have similar retirement benefits?....crown corporation.

When I retired, I got a week's pay for every year worked.  That's overly generous, but I didn't turn down the money. :D  That sounds like something people in the military get.....clergy?

General Discussion / Getting 2 hearing aids...
« on: February 03, 2019, 05:12:05 am »
Getting 2 hearing aids from St. Mike's hospital.  They deal with various vendors.  (didn't know you can buy hearing aids via a hospital, get them adjusted, fixed (?) there.)

I'm getting an over the ear one kind....forget how audiologist and I decided on that kind.

I had thought I was hard of hearing in only my right ear - that's what the ENT Dr. said.  I was surprised when the audiologist mentioned BOTH ears.

Despite this, I almost never ask anyone to repeat what they say - on my right side only, and a little more lately.

Hearing aids cost as much as a Ferrrari!

Luckily, OHIP contributes $1,000, and my former work's plan probably contributes $1,400.

Peter

How am I gonna come up with the other $75,000 I owe? ::).....marry a rich widow?  :o

Actually, the total cost is over $3,000, and that's with the company's "permanent" discount.  Over $3,000 isn't unusual, from what I've heard.

Thanks, guys.

I'm lucky - I've only seen one psychiatrist, and I saw him for 15 (?) years.

I'm not including two (or more?) resident psychiatrists at St. Mike's years ago.  I stopped going because of no rapport with psychiatrists I only saw for months, and then not again.

I got an appointment with the psychiatrist I saw for 15 (?) years soon after - I saw his name in the paper in an article about CBT.  This was ages ago.

Update:  found out today I have an appt with one (geriatric, I assume) on February 8.  :D

I'm surprised my appt is so soon!.....compared to what I've heard about other people trying to see psychiatrists.

Just a theory - maybe there are lots of geriatric psychiatrists, and therefore they have a smaller workload?
Or, psychiatrists take older people first.

What a coincidence!  Both late brother and wife were avid birders.

Not sure what I'm doing tomorrow or Christmas....if nothing much, that's o.k.

Right about constantly making adjustments!

Hi, guys.....Our "Christmas" on Saturday was o.k.....but a little flat with deceased brother not there.  It was o.k. all in all.

We had a second Christmas party with turkey today, but I wasn't in the mood because of Saturday.
We had a Christmas party with turkey last week, with an Elvis impersonator after dinner.  I snuck off to buy some stuff at Home Depot.

Turns out the Elvis impersonator is the son of last year's Elvis impersonator!!

We have Christmas on the 15th due to some relatives' schedules, one relative's birthday is Christmas etc.

We do potluck.

We usually pick a name out of a hat the previous Christmas to give that person a surprise gift.

This year, we're donating money to The Toronto Wildlife Centre in memory of my brother who just passed away.  He was a "birder."

If he saw a bird, he could often tell if it's gender, and if it was a juvenile or an adult!  ;)
