General Discussion / My brother with leukemia....
« on: February 18, 2020, 02:35:51 am »
Sorry to hog all the real estate here, but I may as well move "my brother with leukemia" from the thread "Christmas/Vacation plans?"

I had said
My brother is moving into a retirement home.  It won't be expensive, as he only requires minimal care.  (meals only?)

I saw him today, and it really hit home how helpless he is.......
as he only requires minimal care.  (meals only?)  I may be mistaken on this....he may require more care.

I've been to lots at MDAO, but not lately.  I found them helpful.  I should go again.

If they still have it, I've been to the Clutter./Hoarding group.  I clutter, but I don't hoard.

Thanks, Paul.

I've also heard of people living with it for years and years.

Good news:  today he said his recent blood test results didn't require him to get a transfusion.

Actually, he does have one of those walkers with brakes and a basket.

To be honest, I don't ask a lot of questions re his illness, treatment - he's cranky to begin with, and much more cranky since he became sick.

Hi, Paul....He's doing o.k., but I'm surprised he doesn't have the kind with brakes and baskets to store stuff.

I don't know if leukemia is progressive:  the person that has it gets worse and worse?.....or can the getting worse be stopped.
Not sure how much his chemo helps.

sarahruth, welcome, if you haven't been welcome already.

You have tough issues also.

Thanks, Paul.  It's not painful, thank goodness.

General Discussion / heart ailment...

Found out I have atrial fibrillation a while ago.

Atrial fibrillation is an irregular and often rapid heart rate that can increase your risk of strokes, heart failure and other heart-related complications.

My nurse practitioner found out accidentally when she was checking my chest.  She then sent me to Emergency (St. Mikes - 5 minutes away)

This isn't something I noticed myself - I noticed a rapid heartbeat the odd time....didn't think anything of it.

An "ablation" cures this, and 99% effective.  You can do it with local anesthetic  :o or general, whereby you're out like a light.

The ablation is a few weeks down the road.

Heart ailments don't run in my family.

I have to learn to take my own pulse ::) -  I never have, and I don't know what's normal or not.

Saw my brother the other day, and he was using a walker for the first time!  :(  He uses the plain aluminum one, not the one with brakes, and a tray to hold stuff.

Nice to hear from Soozan!

I'm ok, but my brother's leukemia (he found out about 5 weeks ago) is stressful.

I can do things to lessen stress like yoga...which I haven't done lately.   :-[
But I wll.

Hi, mom.....Sounds good.

We usually go to nephew's on Christmas Day, but he was out of town.

If he was in town, I may have cancelled - I have a terrible cold since last Friday.

My family usually has a potluck a week before Christmas Eve, but no one volunteered to host this year.
I'll probably have the usual Christmas turkey with nephew and others on Christmas Day.

My younger brother having leukemia puts a damper on things.  He found out a few weeks ago.  He says his type of leukemia is less dangerous than other kinds.

I had pizza.

We didn't really celebrate Thanksgiving when I was growing up.
