General Discussion / Sleepwalking?
« on: June 24, 2018, 02:40:48 pm »
Sleepwalking - I've done that less than 5 times, and only the last year or so.

I only know I sleepwalked when I wake up, and notice that I rearranged papers on a desk, or tossed them on the floor - stuff like that.

During the sleepwalking, I only walk a few feet from my bed.....but I don't like it, and it's creepy.

Ambien can cause sleepwalking, but I don't have Ambien anymore.

I'm going to a sleep clinic, but not because of sleepwalking - now that I'm also a patient at the geriatric part of the hospital (St. Michaels) (I'm 71), I think they send all new patients to a sleep clinic (?).
I think I forgot to tell my nurse practitioner that I've sleepwalked.

General Discussion / Worried about getting dementia......
« on: June 17, 2018, 09:57:19 pm »
(I always forget the difference between that and Alzheimers......doesn't bother me that I don't remember)

My nurse practioner mentioned "to rule out dementia"......"we'll give you an MRI, refer you to the geriatric section."  I can't remember what started all this.

....but what DOES bother me is having a very bad "senior moment" every day since then......  Funny that I can't remember them, because
some of them were disturbing.

BTW, getting the day wrong doesn't bother me so much, but I was positive yesterday was Saturday.......I discovered it wasn't when I was in the Eaton Centre and asked a restaurant when they close.......they said "9:30 p.m."........on a Sunday?......I was sooo surprised!

My last bad "senior moment" was last week, when I discovered 2 brochures in my bag, and I don't remember my nurse pracitioner giving them to me.
I was very alarmed.....and something like this was happening Every day.

General Discussion / I'm now "geriatric!" (just turned 71)
« on: June 10, 2018, 04:26:34 pm »
I'm now seeing a geriatric specialist.....not sure if I have to drop my nurse practitioner/family Dr.  All are at St. Mike's Toronto.

He adjusted some of my meds like replacing Citalopram (Cymbalta) with Mirtazapine  (also goes by other names like Remeron.)

It says it also works on anxiety - they all say that!  It's the only antidepressant I've taken at bed time.  I still take Wellbutrin XL when I get up.

Peter

BTW, last week or so, I fell on my face....but in the garden of our apt building.  I didn't trip or feel light headed - I fell "for no reason," but two people had to help me up.  No pain, no blood or anything, but I went to St. Mike's Emergency.  I learned later that Emergency alerted the Geriatric Dept about me.

General Discussion / Older brother (76 or 77) has bad prostate cancer
« on: March 11, 2018, 03:05:43 am »
Not sure how it was discovered, but he avoids Dr's, since there's nothing wrong with him that he can see.   >:( :(

He's getting stomach injections once a month, and up to 39 chemo treatments starting in May.

He's doing o.k., more or less, as he was skiing (!!) the other day.

He looks o.k.

I have 4 brothers alltogether, so we have to be careful/get tested.

General Discussion / jury duty...
« on: January 11, 2018, 06:26:17 am »
Got a letter re jury duty in early February.  Actually, this doesn't mean that I'll actually be chosen. (?)

The day after the jury duty, I start a mindfulness course at St. Michael's hospital.

I'm going to tell them via letter I can't go because of the course.  Also, the course is important for me, as I've been taking meds for depression and anxiety (more for depression) forever.

Re proof of the above, I have semi-flimsy proof like my medications record from my pharmacy, but it only goes back a year.  I also have an appointment card that mentions the time and date of the course.

If need be, I guess I could get a letter from my nurse p or Dr.

General Discussion / "Christmas Eve"
« on: December 18, 2017, 11:38:50 pm »
We open presents Christmas Eve, but early because of peoples' schedules.  We opened them on the 16th (potluck).  We choose one name for gifts.

My nephew got me:
-a cat mug (a good one!)
-yoga cats calendar
-cat bums colouring book

Trivia:  why the does the Royal Family open gifts Christmas Eve?  Because they're German (partly) like me!  The Queen's original name is a really long German one (same name as the King of Bulgaria - a lot of royalty are related to each other) which was changed to Windsor because of the War.

I knew Philip was born in Greece...didn't know his mother's last name another long German one.  He's also related to the former Czar of Russia.

I believe the custom of Christmas trees was introduced by one of the Queen's German ancestors.

General Discussion / Seeing a therapist soon....a Social Worker student....
« on: December 07, 2017, 12:54:24 am »
I mentioned on Dragonfly's post I would be seeing a Ph.D. psychology student as a therapist.

I'm mistaken - make that (probably) a M.S.W. student, not a psychology student.

Paul M. asked:
Hello Peter.  I am only guessing here but I presume the student would be under a doctors supervision. Do you know if the Doctor would see you once in a while or just review the students notes. I'm just curious, I've worked with students before, but never for psychology problems and I jut wondered how it works. If you decide to go that way, keep us informed. Thx and Take Care. paul m

Paul, I don't know any of that.  I saw my Nurse Practitioner yesterday, and spoke to the Social Work student today very briefly.

BTW, I could've seen a peer support worker at MDAO....  I did, once upon a time, but it didn't work out.

I'm seeing this person for procrastination and anxiety when multitasking.  Procrastination is old news, anxiety when multitasking is new.

I'll keep you guys informed...

General Discussion / Memory and Brain Health Test.......
« on: September 19, 2017, 03:16:46 am »
Went to a community centre for a "brain health" and memory test for seniors.....administered by Baycrest.  A half hour or so test on a laptop.  BTW, some questions on mood today, and lately.

My test result - percentile - 1 out of a 100....I was shocked.

I can do the test again at home.  Below a certain score...they said to "see your doctor."

Mitigating factors (small)-
-hard to get used to laptop keyboard (I'm a fast typist)....hard to get used to "foreign" keyboards, like the desktop downstairs in my bldg
-can't remember the second reason!....boo hoo.

I know I didn't do well on matching faces and names part of the test......the only part of the test whereby they DIDN'T say if you did well or not

Not the end of the world, but I'm shocked....they handed out literature, but I don't want to read it yet.

I know I have trouble with names.....forgot "Baycrest" a few times....but I don't say the same thing over and over like proverbial elderly people do.
I'm 70.

Not the end of the world.

General Discussion / "myth" of expired medications.....
« on: September 09, 2017, 12:30:22 am »
Not sure about this.

The kind of meds we take......maybe too dicey to take expired ones?

I believe the "world record" for this is 40!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! years.  It was a med the U.S. army was using.

General Discussion / Much more confident lately - I can feel it.
« on: August 27, 2017, 01:44:15 am »
I realize this "treatment" isn't for everyone.

I went to Hanlan's Point "clothes optional beach"  a few times. I may go tomorrow, although it might be cool.

My first time ever!  Always wanted to do this.

-re the beach, most people are "textiles," and guys!  ("textilesa" are clothed people)

-a Meetup.com group kinda runs the beach, and they also don't like all the textiles going there....Of course, you can't force people to undress.

-the Meetup.com group brings sports equipment, volleyball nets etc sometimes.

It's a great feeling being there!

Volunteers?....LOL   But it is cooling off.

General Discussion / cousin's wife died a few days ago....
« on: July 08, 2017, 10:50:59 am »
She had breast cancer - was lying down a lot the last while.  This wasn't so unexpected.

Her daughter in law in the same house has breast cancer....but in remission.

This hit me for a loop - I didn't eat or stay awake for 2 days because of this.  I'm better now.

Viewing is Monday, burial is Monday?  I have no car, but I get rides, and also, a lot of these places (cemetery) are near me.

General Discussion / Feeling pressure - I'm 70 next week!
« on: June 01, 2017, 05:37:05 am »
It's my own pressure - no one has said:  "so next week is the big day, eh?" or similar.  I'm in a seniors' building - haven't told anyone yet - don't want a party.

70 SOUNDS a lot older than 69.  I have two older brothers, btw.  We have good genes - from the neck down!....no joke.

I look younger, despite grey and missing hair.

Birthday present to myself: http://www.hammacher.com/Product/88321?promo=search

We have a rowing machine in our tiny "gym" downstairs, but I'd rather have my own....I have a tiny apt, but that's o.k.

I've been doing yoga again, but it isn't so aerobic.....the rowing machine sure will be!

Peter

I'll fix the font next time.

Re party, my brothers and I except for one out of town (I have 4 brothers) celebrate our birthdays in a restaurant.....ever since our mother died 12 (?) years ago....maybe more.

I celebrate on my own with treats also - President's Choice Frozen Butterfly Shrimp!   ;D  and such.

General Discussion / Support group, and magazine-type site....

Haven't really looked at it.

I don't think it's religious despite a name like "Mighty."

General Discussion / Re clutter....
« on: April 16, 2017, 01:16:50 am »
I read somewhere that just LOOKING at clutter can increase one's cortisone or whatever - it affects you.

When I get depressed or anxious I often have no idea why - I can't catch the thoughts, as they're buried.

Maybe just looking at my clutter without any thoughts affects me.

I've been to the clutter support group twice at MDAO.....guess it helped.

General Discussion / "Emergency Nap Syndrome" and similar....
« on: January 12, 2017, 05:40:58 pm »
"Emergency Nap Syndrome" - Paul M. may have invented the term.

I have a lot of tidying up to do.  I was barely thinking about it, and not worrying about it.  All of a sudden, I have to take a nap!
I guess I'm worrying/procrastinating unconsciously/subconsciously (?), and that "hit" me, and caused me to nap all of a sudden.
This has happened now and then.

I'm unable to catch a lot of thoughts that may make me depressed too - they're beneath the surface, and very brief.
